SYNOPSIS

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna is a heartwarming and magical story which follows Mika Moon, a young witch who has spent her whole life hiding her magic because of strict rules that force witches to live apart from one another. But when she gets an unexpected invitation to Nowhere House to help three young witches control their powers, Mika finds herself on a journey that changes her life in ways she never imagined.  

One of the things I love most about this book is Mika’s struggle with feeling different. She has spent her entire life keeping her magic a secret, just like how many people today feel the need to hide parts of themselves, whether it’s their identity, their dreams, or their struggles, out of fear of judgment. Her journey of self-acceptance is inspiring and reminds us that being different isn’t something to be ashamed of. Mika’s story encourages us to embrace who we are and find people who love and accept us for it.  

Another interesting thing from this book is the theme of found family. When Mika arrives at Nowhere House, she meets a group of people who, even though they aren’t related by blood, become her real family. This book beautifully shows that family isn’t just about being related, but it’s about love, support, and the people who truly accept us for who we are. In today’s world, not everyone gets that kind of support from their biological family, so finding people who truly care for us is more important than ever. This story shows how chosen families, whether they’re friends, mentors, or even coworkers, can be just as meaningful as traditional ones.  

Beyond that, this book also does a great job of showing how small acts of kindness can change lives. The characters at Nowhere House support each other in such meaningful ways, ans prove that simple gestures of care and understanding can make a huge difference. Mika’s presence brings warmth and love to the people around her, and it’s a reminder that kindness is a powerful force. In a world that often feels divided, this book is a comforting reminder that love, acceptance, and connection can bring people together.

Another thing I really love about The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is how it challenges the idea that being different means being alone. In this world, witches are supposed to live in isolation for their own safety, and Mika has spent her whole life following this rule. But when she arrives at Nowhere House, she starts to realize that maybe she doesn’t have to be alone after all. She learns that opening up to others and letting them in can make life so much more meaningful.  

This book made me think about how a lot of people struggle with loneliness, whether it’s because of social pressure, fear of rejection, or past experiences. Mika’s journey shows that even if we’ve been alone for a long time, it’s never too late to find a place where we belong. There are always people out there who will accept and love us for who we are, even if we feel different.

WHAT I LOVE

■Mika is such a lovable protagonist, she's kind, a little lonely, and just trying to figure out where she belongs. I enjoy following her journey and seeing her grow. But what makes this book even better is the supporting cast. Jamie, the grumpy-but-soft-hearted librarian, is the perfect contrast to Mika’s warmth. The three young witches bring so much fun and chaos, and even the other witches in Mika’s world are unique and sometimes funny. Their relationships feel real, full of love and care, which made me even more invested in the book.  

■I’m a huge fan of found family trope, and this book delivers it in the best way. The people at Nowhere House may not be related by blood, but they create a family through love, support, and acceptance. Mika’s journey of finding people who truly see and care for her is so touching. It’s a reminder that family isn’t just about being related, but it’s about being with people who make you feel safe and loved.  

■Nowhere House feels like the kind of place I’d love to visit. It’s full of whimsical magic and has such a warm, comforting vibe. The way the setting is described makes it feel like a home you’d never want to leave. If you love books that give you that cozy, magical escape, this one is perfect.  

■Even though this book deals with themes like loneliness and self-acceptance, it never feels too heavy. Instead, it’s full of warmth, kindness, and healing. By the time I finished, I felt so comforted and happy. It’s the kind of book that leaves you feeling lighter, and I love that.  

■Sangu Mandanna’s writing is so immersive and beautiful. Her descriptions make the magic feel real, and the emotions in the story feels relatable. There’s something almost lyrical about the way she writes, which made me feel completely lost in this story, in the best way possible.
