Just like the performers put on magical acts, we sometimes create a false image of ourselves to impress others.

The way the characters live through their illusions really stood out to me. People like Chandresh and Isobel are perfect examples. Chandresh presents himself as a confident leader, but it’s just a front to cover up his personal struggles. Isobel, with her fortune-telling, hides her own uncertainties behind her mystical abilities. Even the romance between Celia and Marco starts with magic, almost like they fall in love with the illusion of each other rather than their real selves.

Another thing I found interesting was how much influence the mentors had on Celia and Marco. Celia’s dad, for example, is abusive and forces her into this intense magical training that leaves her physically and emotionally drained. Because of how harsh he is, Celia becomes isolated and overly focused on mastering her magic.
