Crossing the Black Ice Bridge by Alex Bell | Book Review

Crossing the Black Ice Bridge is the third book in The Polar Bear Explorers' Club series, and I jumped into it right after finishing the second book. I read it as part of the Wintery Hollow Readathon 2024 for the prompt: a book about friendship, and it’s such a perfect fit. The story starts exactly where the second book ended. Stella and her friends head to the Black Ice Bridge, a legendary and dangerous place, to get back the stolen Book of Frost. They need it to save their friends after what happened in their last expedition.

BOOK REVIEW

Crossing the Black Ice Bridge by Alex Bell feels more serious than the first two books in The Polar Bear Explorers' Club series. While the charm and adventure are still there, the humor is less frequent because of the tense situations Stella and her friends have to face. Despite this, the story keeps the strong friendship between the characters at its core, which shows how they stay together and support each other no matter what.  

One thing I really like about this book is how it talks about judgment and understanding. It reminds us not to make quick assumptions about people and to think about the deeper reasons behind their actions. It’s a good lesson about looking at things from different perspectives and being more empathetic, which I think is especially important for younger readers.  

Another theme I found interesting is how good intentions can sometimes lead to bad outcomes. The story shows why it’s important to stay responsible and think about the consequences of our actions. This really made me think about real-life issues, like conservation efforts, where people might start with good intentions but end up causing harm if they’re not careful.  

The book also explores how news can shape people’s opinions so quickly. Whether it’s good or bad, a single story can make someone a hero or a villain without showing the full picture. I think this is super relevant today, where it’s easy for misinformation or one-sided stories to spread. It’s a reminder to be thoughtful about the things we read, share, and believe.

Crossing the Black Ice Bridge makes me think about fairness and how people judge others. The story shows how society often focuses on big, dramatic actions instead of looking at someone’s whole life or intentions. Some characters in this book have to do something huge and good just to change how others see them, which makes you wonder if that’s fair. Should people have to go to such extremes to prove they’re not bad, or should we all try harder to understand others without needing something so over-the-top to convince us?  

This book also talks about how history can be easily forgotten or changed. It shows how someone who was once famous for their big achievements can slowly be erased from memory over time. Their story gets twisted, and they eventually become more like a myth than a real person. This idea made me think about how history is often written by those in power and how much of what we believe might not be the whole truth.

Meskipun pesona dan petualangannya masih ada, humornya kurang sering muncul karena situasi menegangkan yang harus dihadapi Stella dan teman-temannya. Crossing the Black Ice Bridge membuat kita berpikir tentang keadilan dan bagaimana orang menilai orang lain. Cerita ini menunjukkan bagaimana masyarakat sering kali berfokus pada tindakan besar dan dramatis alih-alih melihat keseluruhan hidup atau niat seseorang. Gagasan ini membuat kita berpikir tentang bagaimana sejarah sering kali ditulis oleh mereka yang berkuasa dan seberapa banyak dari apa yang kita yakini mungkin bukan kebenaran sepenuhnya.)

THINGS I LOVE

■ One of my favorite things about this book is its world-building. It’s so rich and creative, with unexplored places and hidden mysteries that make the story even more exciting. I also love the new magical creatures appeared int his book which are so unique and enrich the whole story.

■ I really like how solid the concept of this book is. The Black Ice Bridge was mentioned way back in the first book, through Beanie’s story about his dad. That small detail set up everything for this third book, and now all the questions from earlier in the series are finally answered.  

■ The English in this book is simple and easy to follow, which makes it great for a middle-grade and non-native English readers.  

■ Even though this book has less humor than the first two, the jokes and funny moments that are there really help lighten the serious tone, especially during their journey. It’s a nice mix of emotions that keeps the story from feeling too heavy.  

■ Like the other books in the series, most of the story is about their journey and exploration. But honestly, it’s never boring. You get to learn so much more about the world, the magic system, and the characters as they travel.  

■ The characters are still one of my favorite parts. They’re so well-developed and feel real, with a lot of growth, especially from Ethan. Plus, there are some new characters introduced in this book, and they bring a fresh and interesting vibe to the group.

Buku ini sangat kaya dan kreatif, dengan tempat-tempat yang belum dijelajahi dan misteri tersembunyi yang membuat ceritanya semakin menarik. Aku juga menyukai makhluk-makhluk ajaib baru yang muncul dalam buku ini yang sangat unik dan memperkaya keseluruhan cerita.

■ Aku sangat menyukai betapa solidnya konsep buku ini. Black Ice Bridge disebutkan di buku pertama, melalui cerita Beanie tentang ayahnya. Detail kecil itu menyiapkan segalanya untuk buku ketiga ini, dan sekarang semua pertanyaan dari seri sebelumnya akhirnya terjawab.

■ Bahasa Inggris dalam buku ini sederhana dan mudah dipahami, yang membuatnya cocok untuk pembaca middle-middle-grade dan non-penutur asli bahasa Inggris.

■ Meskipun buku ini memiliki lebih sedikit humor daripada dua buku pertama, lelucon dan momen lucu yang ada di sini benar-benar membantu meringankan kesan seriusnyq, terutama selama perjalanan mereka. Ini adalah kombinasi yang bagus yang membuat cerita tidak terasa terlalu berat.

Crossing the Black Ice Bridge is full of adventure, mystery, and deeper messages that make you think a lot. The tone is a bit more serious compared to the first two books, but it’s still really exciting. The world-building is amazing, the plot is solid, and the characters are so well-written that you can’t help but care about them. I also like how the book explores ideas like not judging others too quickly, how news can shape opinions, and how history can be rewritten over time. Even with the serious parts, there’s still enough humor and fun to balance it all out. It’s a meaningful and entertaining read, whether you’re younger or older readers.
