I read Good Girl, Bad Blood in March 2024, right after finishing A Good Girl's Guide to Murder in February. This is the second book in Holly Jackson's series, and it picks up where the first one left off. Pip Fitz-Amobi is back, but this time, instead of solving cases, she’s focusing on her true-crime podcast about what happened in the first book. At first, she promises herself she won’t take on any more investigations. But when a local boy goes missing and the police don’t seem to care, she has no choice but to step in. The stakes are much higher in this one, and Pip goes through some really difficult moments that push her to her limits.

Pip is not a detective anymore.

With the help of Ravi Singh, she released a true-crime podcast about the murder case they solved together last year. The podcast has gone viral, yet Pip insists her investigating days are behind her.

But she will have to break that promise when someone she knows goes missing. Jamie Reynolds has disappeared, on the very same night the town hosted a memorial for the sixth-year anniversary of the deaths of Andie Bell and Sal Singh.

The police won't do anything about it. And if they won't look for Jamie then Pip will, uncovering more of her town's dark secrets along the way... and this time everyone is listening. But will she find him before it's too late?

BOOK REVIEW

Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson is an amazing sequel that kept me interested to its mystery, but it’s not just about solving a case. It dives into bigger ideas like justice, right and wrong, and how media influences people. Pip’s true-crime podcast plays a big role in the story, which gives her a platform to share important issues and stand up for those who are ignored. But with that power comes a lot of responsibility. Pip has to make difficult choices about what she shares and deal with the consequences, not just for herself but for everyone involved.  

This book also does a great job showing how complicated justice can be. Pip finds herself in situations where the right choice isn’t clear, and she has to figure out where she stands. It really made me think about how hard it is to do the right thing when there’s no easy answer. That’s something I could relate to, and it made the story feel more real.  

What I also loved was how this book focuses on understanding others. It shows that people’s actions, even bad ones, often come from pain or personal struggles. Holly Jackson does a great job making you see things from different perspectives, which made me feel more connected to the characters and their stories. It’s not just about the mystery but also the people involved, and that’s what made this book so good.

THINGS I LIKE

■ This book is full of surprises! The clues after clues kept me guessing, and the stakes felt so much higher than in the first book. The pacing was perfect because it built up the tension so well that I didn’t want to stop reading.  

■ I love how Pip is such a complex character. She’s super smart and determined, but she’s also dealing with her own flaws and struggles, like trauma and complicated moral decisions. It made her feel really real, and I found myself rooting for her the whole way.  

■ Like the first book, the way this book uses things like podcast transcripts, text messages, and other multimedia elements is so cool. It makes the story feel modern and fresh, and it helped me get even more into what was happening, especially since the podcast is a big part of the plot.  

■ Pip’s friends and family aren’t just in the background, they’re fully fleshed-out characters who contribute a lot to the story. Their relationships with Pip and their own contributions to the mystery made the book even more engaging for me.  

■ What I liked most was how the book didn’t shy away from showing the consequences of Pip’s actions. It felt real to see how her choices affected her mental health and her relationships with others.

(■ Buku ini penuh kejutan! Petunjuk demi petunjuk membuat aku terus menebak, dan taruhannya terasa jauh lebih tinggi daripada di buku pertama. Alurnya sempurna karena menciptakan ketegangan dengan sangat baik sehingga aku tidak ingin berhenti membaca.

■ Aku suka bagaimana Pip menjadi karakter yang sangat kompleks. Dia sangat cerdas dan punya tekad kuat, tetapi dia juga menghadapi kekurangan dan perjuangannya sendiri, seperti trauma dan keputusan moral yang sulit. Hal ini membuatnya terasa sangat nyata, dan aku mendukungnya sepanjang jalan.

■ Seperti buku pertama, cara buku ini menggunakan hal-hal seperti transkrip podcast, pesan teks, dan elemen multimedia lainnya sangat keren. Good Girl, Bad Blood is a great follow-up to the first book. It has more twists, more drama, and deeper themes that kept me interested the whole time. I loved how it shows the challenges of standing up for what’s right, especially when no one else will. Pip’s story really makes you think about how far you’d go to help others and how hard it is to always do the right thing. If you liked the first book, this one is definitely worth reading.
